Memphis Gets Plug In Electric Coop Magazine

For years the people who call Memphis home have known it is one of the best places to live. Now all of the readers of Rural Missouri, the statewide publication of the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives, will know it too.

Each year the magazine publishes the Best of Missouri report, rating a variety of topics in the state such as best restaurants, best golf courses and best places to live.

While Memphis was not listed among the top three choices by the readers in the category of Best Town to Live In the magazines editorial staff chimed in by listing the Scotland County seat as the Editors choice.

Memphis, MO., may not have the barbecue and blues of its Tennessee rival but the northeast Missouri town shows what can be done when the people care, the report said.

When asked by local readers why he selected Memphis, Editor Jim McCarty replied I have done several stories in Memphis and have been real impressed with what the citizens have done in that community, especially the chorus group and the Downing House Museum. So many towns have just let themselves die, that is not going to happen in Memphis. Also I just love eating at Keiths.

Columbia, Springfield and Rolla were the top three cities as voted on by the readers.

But the high praise for Memphis was not the only highlight for local readers.

Johnsons Rutledge Flea Market was ranked the third best venue of its type in the state.

Founder Irvin Johnston is gone, but third-place Rutledge in northeast Missouri is Missouris oldest and largest, the article said. We like all three because there are people to haggle with on prices and not just booths.

The Wentzville Community Club Flea Market and the Big Pevely Flea Market ranked first and second.

Rural Missouri brings entertaining features and informative articles to more than 400,000 members of Missouris electric co-ops each month.
