2003 A Record Year For SCMH Birthing Center

Having a baby is a giant step for mothers and fathers. You took the classes. You looked-up every thing you could find on the Internet. You’ve spent hours investigating, learning, trying to imagine what that day will really be like. You’ve listened with intent and great interest at every thing your doctor has told you. You’ve had a hundred questions, some of them answered to your satisfaction and others that can’t be answered.

Everyone has their own story about what it is going to be like on that special day, but no two stories are the same. You are very excited about the event that is about to take place in your life. One thing you know for sure, life for you will change forever ... on that day.

During 2003 “that day” occurred a record setting 61 times at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

For decades the “Cradle-Of-Care” Birthing Center at SCMH has made the miracle of birth a special day in a new mother’s life comfortable and safe.

“To the best of my memory, 2003 has been a record year for births” stated Dr. Ronald Keller, who has been delivering new-borns since the beginning of the obstetrics department at Memphis.

Keller is among the growing number of physicians at SCMH that have expanded obstetrics practices allowing more and more area parents to have their children at SCMH.

That increase peaked in 2003 according to Dr. Robert Schneider. “We’ve had sixty-one births during 2003, and that is a record for the birthing center”.

The addition of surgical services by Dr. Celeste Miller allows mothers that require a C-section birth to remain at the local hospital for the procedure instead of having to travel further away from home to have their baby.

The hospital has started off 2004 with two births already in the first two weeks of January. The record pace of the previous year averaged out to just over five births a month. The OB department did not anticipate any problems reaching that number with several expecting mothers due in that time span. Will the hospital continue the record pace, only time will tell if the stork will get to SCMH more times in 2004.
