Lady Tigers Back To .500 With Win Over Milan In Tournament Opener
Scotland County overcame a slow start to rally for a 49-41 win over Milan in the opening round of the Putnam County Tournament December 8.
A pair of sophomore guards helped SCR-I overcome a first quarter deficit and the Lady Tigers clamped down on defense in the second half, limiting Milan to just 13 points in the final 16 minutes of the game to improve to 2-2 on the year.
Ali Fromm led SCR-I with 13 points and got a boost off the bench from fellow sophomore, Jamie Fuller, who poured in a career high 11 points, including nine points during the key second quarter rally.
Scotland County trailed 12-7 after the first period as Milanís Jessica Taylor had six points in the opening frame. Taylor added seven more points in the second quarter to help keep her team ahead 28-24 at the break.
But the Lady Tigers allowed Taylor just one more point the rest of the game. SCR-I outscored Milan 15-6 in the third period to pull ahead 39-34. Fromm hit a three pointer during the rally, and yet another member of the talented sophomore class, Brittney Courtright put in a couple scores.
Milan struggled from the free throw line in the fourth period, hitting just three of eight from the charity stripe, preventing the Wildcats from making a run at the lead. Senior Jessie Cotton sealed the game from the free throw line in the fourth period as Scotland County went on to the 49-41 win.
Fromm led the Lady Tigers with 13 points. Fuller finished with 11 and Cotton had eight points. Brandi Mallett pitched in with seven points and Courtright rounded out a balanced scoring attack with six points. Rebecca Consbrock and Angie Bulen each contributed two points.
Milanís Jessica Taylor led all scorers with 14 points.
