Charity Stripe Gives Lady Tigers Advantage In Win Over Cougars

Tis the season of giving and the Scotland County Lady Tigers took advantage of the goodwill to pick up the teams first win of the year with some quality work at the charity stripe.

SCR-I made 22 of 30 free throws en route to a 52-42 win on the road at Highland December 4.

Early on neither team appeared too charitable as both squads played stingy defense to hold the score to just 16-10 at halftime.

The Tigers played a zone defense in the first half but maintained solid pressure on the ball, reeking havoc on the Highland offense and holding the home team to just two points in the first eight minutes.

Ali Fromm got the offense going with a perfect six of six performance at the free throw line in the opening frame as SCR-I led 10-2.

But the Lady Tigers had troubles of their own against Highlands pressure defense, struggling to get the offense started versus the Highland perimeter defenders who were overplaying the passing lanes.

The only two baskets of the second period came on offensive rebounds by sophomore forward Angie Bulen.

Both teams opened up the scoring a bit to begin the third period. Brittney Courtright hit a pair of jumpers from the free throw line to maintain a slim SCR-I lead. After Bulen hit a free throw Courtright made her third jumper of the period but the Lady Tigers still could not pull away from Highland.

The game changed at the 3:00 minute mark when Coach Kelly Swearingen switched to the full-court press.

The move paid immediate dividends as Jamie Fuller stole the inbounds pass and scored.

Jessie Cotton was the next to pilfer a pass and she went the distance for the three point play to quickly put Scotland County ahead 30-22.

The senior guard nailed a three pointer on the next possession and Fuller and Courtright each added buckets to close out the third period with SCR-I leading 37-25.

A jumper by Cotton to open the fourth period gave the visitors their biggest lead of the night at 39-25.

That margin was whittled down to just eight points when SCR-I went to work again at the charity stripe.

Fromm and Rebecca Consbrock both hit a pair of free throws to give their team some breathing room.

After a three-point play by Fromm ended a spurt by the Cougars, Cotton closed out the game for good going five of six at the free throw line to preserve the 52-42 win.

Cotton finished with 15 points to lead all scorers. Fromm added 11 and Courtright finished with 10. Fuller pitched in a season-high seven points to balance the SCR-I scoring attack.
