Tigers Junior High Boys Crowned Champs Of Putnam County Tourney

After starting the year 1-4 the Scotland County junior high boys basketball has turned things around and brought home some hardware in the process.

SCR-I swept through the Putnam County Tournament to win the championship and then knocked off North Shelby as part of the current four-game winning streak.

The Tigers started the year 1-4 with loses to Clark County (41-17), Canton (37-16), Schuyler County (40-29) and Clark County again (43-20). The one win was a 29-22 victory over Putnam County.

The Tigers opened the PC Tourney November 18 against Milan. Andrew Duley sealed the 29-27 win with a late free throw to send the Tigers into the semi-finals against the host team.

Eric Glass had 12 points to pace the Tigers attack and Cody Musgrove added six.

Seth Hayes opened game two with a three-pointer and the Tigers never relinquished the lead in a hard-fought 32-27 win against the Midgets.

The Tigers 2-3 zone slowed down the up-tempo style of the Putnam county team and SCR-I got a solid game on both ends of the court from Duley, the team lone seventh grade starter.

After battling foul trouble in the first half Musgrove dominated the boards in the second half en route to a 10-point night. Hayes and Duley each finished with seven points and Travis Trueblood pitched in with four points and Brett Courtright had two points.

The trophy game was double sweet for the Tigers as they took home the trophy and avenged an early season loss with a 36-26 victory against Schuyler County.

The Tigers fell behind 6-0 after the first period before a 14-0 run gave them a nice cushion at the intermission. Hayes poured in a pair of hoops before Trueblood knocked down a shot at the buzzer to keep the lead in double digits heading into the fourth quarter.

Musgrove finished the night with 15 points to lead the offense. Glass had 10 and Duley and Hayes each finished with four.

The first place trophy was not the only award the Tigers captured. The team was also honored with the tournaments sportsmanship trophy.

The winning streak looked in jeopardy November 28 when the Tigers took on North Shelby. SCR-I couldnt buy a bucket early on. Musgrove kept his team in the game with solid work on the boards but the Tigers still trailed by eight at the break.

The team defense buckled down in the third period as SCR-I pulled within three points before Musgrove put together his best seven minutes of the year scoring 11 of his season high 22 points in the fourth period to complete the 32-28 come-from-behind victory.

The boys will try to make it five in a row Thursday night at home against Knox County.
