Burgtorf Takes Two Wins At SCS Special Event

Mark Burgtorf may be wondering why he didnít come to Scotland County Speedway more often in 2003. The Quincy, IL driver won not one, but two feature races during the September 20 special event in Memphis.

Burgtorf held off a late challenge from Tommy Elston to take the checkered flag in the late model feature. Terry Schlipman (42) was third followed by Lonnie Bailey (25) in fourth and Thad Trump (94.5) in fifth.

Burgtorf made it a special night by also picking up the victory in the A-modified main event. Jeff Gerhardt was second in the 21G car followed by Bob Dale of Gorin in third. Paul Lawson finished in fourth followed by Jardin Fuller in the fifth spot.

Race fans will notice the glaring absence of 2003 track champion Tony Fraise from the results. The 45 car was a winner but it was at the Featherlite/USMTS Jamboree at Deer Creek Speedway, Spring Valley MN. Terry bested the more than 130-car field to win the $4,000 Friday race and went on to finish eighth overall in the Saturday finale.

After Burgtorf got done monopolizing the winnerís circle there was still a little room left for a couple of local drivers.

Jerry Reese erased any sour taste leftover from his season finale victory by backing it up with win number two of his career as he bested the B-modified field to pick up the victory. Reese had his first ever win ruined by an engine claim that forced him to forfeit not only the victory but his season points as well. The Memphis driver proved he will be a force to deal with next year.

Another local driver enjoyed the limelight for the first time in the hobby stock class. Jeremy Hamlin put the 95 car in the winnerís circle for his first career win. He bested John Oliver, Sr. and Jeff Soper to take the checkered flag.

Jeremy Miller was the winner in a packed field of stock cars while Josh Soper and Michael Sinclair were declared the winners in the cruiser main event that was shortened due to deteriorating track conditions.
