Lady Tigers Capture Championship At Knox CountySoftball Tournament
After a tough start to the season the Scotland County softball team righted the ship, brought home a trophy and avenged its lone loss of the year, all in the same day.
SCR-I was a perfect 3-0 in play at the Knox County Tournament on Saturday, September 6 earning the championship trophy with a 5-1 win over Knox County, who defeated the Lady Tigers two days earlier in the season opener.
Scotland County opened the tourney with a hard fought 2-1 win over Palmyra.
SCR-I struck early as Sara Eggleston opened the game with a lead off single. She moved over on a sacrifice by Valerie Crawford and came around to score when Elizabeth Monroe reached on an error.
The team stretched the advantage to 2-0 in the third. Jamie Fuller singled and stole second. Hot hitting Brandi Mallett stroked an RBI single to add to the lead.
The Lady Tigers took advantage of its limited opportunities scoring twice on just four hits. Palmyra on the other hand was able to plate just one run, coming in the sixth, despite having at least one base runner in every inning.
The win was in jeopardy in Palmyraís final at bat. With runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh Jessie Cotton made a diving catch in foul territory just beyond third base to end the game and preserve the win.
Eggleston took the win on the mound throwing seven innings. She allowed four hits and three walks while striking out five.
The team turned to junior hurler Rebecca Consbrock in game two of the tourney.
Canton took the early 2-0 lead as the defense struggled with a pair of errors in the first inning.
ďWe tried to give this one away,Ē said coach Terri Slaughter. ďBut we got things rolling with the bats and held on for the win.Ē
SCR-I tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of solo runs in the second and third innings. Cotton walked and scored on a double by Ellison in the second. Eggleston singled and stole a base in the third inning before scoring on an RBI hit by Miller.
Canton pulled ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third. That lasted until the fifth frame when SCR-I exploded for three runs.
Crawford singled and scored on a double by Mallett. Fromm and Cotton added RBI singles to make the score 5-3.
The lead swelled to 7-3 in the sixth inning as Eggleston singled ahead of Mallettís second two-bagger of the game. They both scored on a base hit by Brittney Courtright.
Canton made it interesting with three late runs but the team held on for the 7-6 win behind Consbrock. She allowed nine hits and walked two while striking out six to go to 1-0 on the year.
Eggleston was 3-4 at the plate. Mallett went 2-4 and both batters scored two runs a piece. Fromm went 2-3 in the SCR-I offensive show.
Scotland County closed out the day with a 5-1 victory over Knox County to seal the championship and improve the teamís season mark to 3-1.
Eggleston turned in a dominating performance on the mound. She struck out 10 Lady Eagles and allowed just five hits and no walks en route to the complete game victory. She is now 2-1 on the year.
The Lady Tigers got things going right from the get go as Eggleston started the game with a triple. Mallett delivered the base hit to make the score 1-0.
The team got all the offense it needed in the second inning. Consbrock singled to start the frame. Jacqui Drummond then crushed a triple to send the second run of the game home. Fuller made the score 3-0 with an RBI double.
Knox County cut into the lead with a single run in the fifth inning to make the score 3-1.
SCR-I added two insurance runs late. Fuller and Eggleston singled to start the seventh inning. They both scored on a double by Crawford that made the final score 5-1.
