Long Wins Demo Derby For 2nd Straight Season

Eric Long outlasted the storm as the Memphis driver won the 2003 Scotland County Fair Demolition Derby for the second consecutive year despite less than perfect conditions.

Long made it in the back door after failing to win his heat race. He still qualified for the main event and managed to stay running through some of the hardest hitting seen in recent derbies at the Scotland County fairgrounds.

The main event got underway in the midst of high winds and threatening looking skies. But it was the cars that proved to be the most threatening as the fans paid little attention to the gusting dust swirls and crashes of thunder and lightning. Instead they were glued to the track where the cars were going full steam.

At one point in the finale there were half a dozen vehicles jammed together on the south end of the track. The tight fit got even more compact after a pair of huge hits sent one car into the air where it landed atop of pair of other disabled derby cars.

When the smoke cleared there were only two cars left and then the skies opened up and the rain came. Long was able to outlast Brian Burrows on the now slick track to take the victory.

Burrows finished second with Scott Adams third and Bill Anderson in fourth. Rounding out the top 10 were Jamie Ludwig, Ryan Miller, Nick McDaniel, Jody Jones, Harold Miller, Aaron Cline.

Long cashed in before the derby even got started as the fans awarded him the best looking car.

The fan participation also determined the winner of the $100 Hard Charger Award sponsored by K&M Automotive. Kenny Lewis impressed the crowd most with his hit to open the second heat when he crossed the track at the drop of the green flag and delivered a teeth-jarring hit much to the crowd's pleasure.

Heat one was won by Jody Jones and Brian Burrows. Harold Miller and Ryan Miller were the winners in the second heat with Jamie Ludwig and Scott Adams taking the wins in heat number three.
