Applications Due Soon For Fair's Mud Volleyball Event
Scotland County doesn't have any ocean-front beaches so sand is a hot commodity. With the typical spring weather one thing we do have plenty of is mud. And while the professional beach tour may home some of the top athletes in the game you have to watch only a few minutes of players slopping around the pits at the Scotland County Fair to know the annual mud volleyball tournament puts on a pretty good show as well.
It's not to late to sign up your team for this year's tourney. It only costs $25 with as many as 10 members per squad (six play at one time). All entries need to be turned in by June 15 to organizer Robert Monroe or may be mailed to him at 510 W. Jefferson Street, Memphis, MO 63555.
The volleyball event typically features a large number of teams each vying to place their names on the gigantic traveling trophy that goes to the winner of each year's tournament.
"I would like to thank all of the teams and their sponsors for being a part of this event," Monroe said. "It's been a lot of fun each year and we're looking forward to another fun tournament. We appreciate all the people that help us get ready for it each year."
Some special rules apply for the mud volleyball matches. There is no skunk (although some say that it often smells as if there might be a polecat buried under the mud). When serving you are allowed one net service before the possession changes to the other team. There is no spiking allowed and the ball must be in play before the opposition can block.
The fair board maintains a concession stand at the event and participants are allowed to bring their own refreshments but are asked to keep them away from the playing field. There will be a water truck available for players to wash off after playing. There will also be port-a-potties available. The fair board asks that players please not track mud into the art hall or other buildings.
If you like to play volleyball and don't mind getting a little dirty fill out the application and get your team entered today. For more information call Robert Monroe at 660-465-2823.
