Hunters Close Out 2003 Spring Turkey Season

Despite tough weather conditions over much of week three, hunters in Missouri were able to close out the 2003 spring turkey season with a bang. As a matter of fact there were 829 more bangs than last year as Missouri hunters checked in 54,761 birds an increase of 829 turkeys from 2002's total of 53,392.

Scotland County hunters were part of the upward trend in 2003. A total of 622 turkeys were checked in at Jim's Service Station. That was the third highest county total in the northeast region behind Adair County (852) and Macon County (832).

Ten of the 15 counties in the region recorded increases in harvest totals this year. Knox County had the biggest jump, hitting triple digits with 123 more birds (575 total) in 2003. Clark County fell off 17 birds to 579 turkeys. Schuyler County was up 54 birds to 552 while Scotland County had an increase of 32 turkeys.

Statewide it was Texas County that led the way with 1,280 turkeys taken. Laclede County was second highest with 1,138 followed by Howell County with 1,066 turkeys.
