District Title Eludes Campus Bowl Team
The Scotland County campus bowl team dominated 241 of the 250 questions in the Class 2 District 4 Tournament held April 12 at Queen City. Unfortunately those last nine questions proved costly as South Shelby rallied to pull ahead with just eight questions remaining and never relinquished the lead to capture the district title.
SCR-I rolled through the early rounds of the contest. Paris proved no match for the Tigers in the first game as SCR-I prevailed 350-110. Ryan Hinds and Michael Lodewegen each answered nine toss-ups to lead the team in scoring. Jason Findling pitched in with five.
Canton offered even less resistance in game two, falling to Scotland County 325-75. Hinds matched his opening round performance with nine correct toss-ups. Lodewegen added seven and Jennifer Crawford had four.
The Tigers exploded for a tournament-high 450 points in game three as the team continued to roll with a win over Schuyler County 450-140. Hinds dominated the game answering 17 toss-ups. Lodewegen added five and Crawford and Findling combined for five.
SCR-I got a bit of revenge in round four. The Tigers defeated Putnam County 300-155 to avenge a loss to the Midgets to close out the regular season.
That set up a district championship game between SCR-I and South Shelby. The Tigers jumped out to a 115-75 advantage at halftime. That lead shrank to 165-135 after the third quarter.
South Shelby completed the comeback on question 42, erasing a 25-point deficit on one question to take the Cardinals first lead of the contest 175-170. SCR-I stayed within striking distance until the final three questions when South Shelby sealed the 265-200 win.
Hinds had 10 toss-ups in each of the final two contests to complete a solid tournament.
