JV Girls Close Out Season With 12-2 Record
The Scotland County junior varsity girls basketball team closed out the 2002-03 season with a pair of games in February. The Lady Tigers defeated Knox County 50-31 on February 24 at Edina.
SCR-I exploded for 22 points in the second period to erase a three-point deficit after the first period and build a 29-16 lead at the half.
Angie Bulen topped the scorebook with 11 points while Jamie Fuller added 10 points. Jacqui Drummond pitched in eight points in the winning effort.
"This was a much closer game in the first half than what it would appear," said coach Josh Smith. "We came out in the second half on a tear though and put the game away."
The season came to a close February 27 with a hard fought 37-32 loss to Clark County at Kahoka.
SCR-I had just seven points in the first half and trailed by as many as 16 late in the game before rallying to make a game of it.
"I was proud of the way we never gave up," said Smith. "That shows a lot of guts when your down by that many and don't give up."
The Lady Tigers were down 29-16 after the third period. Ashlee Frederick scored eight of her team high 10 points in the final period to help SCR-I rally. Megan Walker finished with seven points.
Smith said free throws were the difference in the game as SCR-I made just eight of 18 from the charity stripe.
"We lost by five points and missed 10 free throws," Smith said. "I have told the girls many times this season that at some point we are going to play a close game and free throws will win the game or lose it. Hopefully they can learn from this."
