It's Good To Be The Host

Two days, two champions, and they did it all on their home turf. The Scotland County varsity and junior high campus bowl teams defended their home field advantage by winning the Scotland County tournaments held March 13 and 14 in Memphis.

The varsity SCR-I squad won the title in the 31st annual Scotland County Invitational Tournament March 13.

The Tigers opened the event with a 265-95 victory over Milan. Ryan Hinds answered nine toss-ups while Michael Lodewegen had seven.

SCR-I met up with Monroe City in the semi-finals and fell behind early. The Tigers trailed 90-75 midway through the second period before rallying for 260-205 win. Hinds had 60 points and Jennifer Crawford added 50.

The championship match was all Scotland County as the Tigers prevailed 455-195 over Clark County to earn the trophy. Hinds played his way on to the all-tourney team with a team high 100 points. Crawford finished with 60 while Lodewegen added 50 and Jason Findling had 40 points for a balanced team scoring performance.

Hinds was named to the all bowl team after answering an average of 8.6 toss-ups per game.

The opponents were different but it was much of the same picture the following day when the SCR-I junior high team was crowned champions of the 33rd annual Scotland County Invitational Tournament.

Milan again was the first round victim for SCR-I. The junior high squad crushed the Wildcats 465-105 behind Lance Smith and Julie Triplett who each answered 12 toss-ups.

The semi-finals were nearly as easy for SCR-I which cruised past North Shelby 310-145. Triplett had 100 points and Smith added 80.

The going was much tougher in the finals where the Tigers fell behind Knox County in the first period. SCR-I trailed until the final two questions of the first half.

The rally carried over into the second half when the Tigers went ahead by as much as 45 points.

The Eagles responded to open the fourth period and regained the lead 240-235. But the Tigers answered one final time and went on for the 305-285 win.

Smith topped the scoring with 80 points followed by Triplett with 70.

Both Triplett and Smith were named to the all-bowl team. Triplett had the third highest scoring average at 10 toss-ups per game while Smith was fourth overall at 9.6 per contest.
