Tigers Can't Miss, Milan Can't Hit In 54-28 SCR-I Win To Open Districts
It was hit and miss in the final game of the opening round of the District 5 Tournament held in Memphis Monday, March 3. The Scotland County Tigers couldn't miss and Milan couldn't hit.
The Wildcats took the opening tip off and scored on a lay-up to lead 2-0. They didn't hit another basket until there was only 2:18 left in the first period.
Scotland County on the other hand simply did not miss. Aaron Dale tied the game with a bucket in the paint. He then hit Clint Cottrell with a nice pass for an easy score. Dale then converted on a fastbreak to make the score 6-2 and force a Milan timeout.
The stoppage didn't slow the Tigers down. The Wildcats adjusted their defense to Dale so Danny Roach stepped up. The junior guard hit a three pointer and followed it up with a jumper off the baseline forcing another Milan timeout with the score 11-2 and 5:43 remaining on the clock.
Aaron Dale was a force in the paint for Scotland County as the Tigers easily outdistanced Milan in the district tourney opener March 3.
Chase Moore got into the act with a pair of scores and with the Tigers ahead 18-2 SCR-I finally missed its first shot of the night with more than four minutes left to play in the quarter.
GRRRRRRR! Danny Roach goes hard to the basket past the Milan defender. The junior guard had seven points during the Tigers first quarter run.
Dale and Cottrell continued to rack up the points in the paint as Scotland County built a 24-6 lead at the end of one quarter.
The second string kept the ball rolling in the second period. Michael Lodewegen had a pair of scores and also dished out a couple of assists and Andy Graham added a bucket in the paint to put the Tigers on top 37-18 at halftime.
Dale and Cottrell combined for 13 points in the third period as the onslaught continued. Scotland County led 52-23 at the end of the third period.
The Tigers must have used up all the offense as the fourth period saw just one shot go through the net for SCR-I. Milan managed just five points in the fourth quarter and Scotland County held on for the 54-28 win to advance to play top seeded Canton in the semi-finals.
In other first round action it was the Knox County girls beating Princeton to move on to play top ranked Milan. The Scotland County Lady Tigers will take on Canton, which beat Schuyler County in the opening round.
Sixth seeded Princeton upset Schuyler County in the other boys first round game. The Tigers will take on Knox County in round two.
