Big Lead Holds Up For Lady Tigers Despite Late Run By LaPlata

Lady Tigers fans likely were a little nervous after a 19-point lead evaporated in the final four minutes of the February 20 contest at LaPlata but in the end Scotland County escaped with a 60-54 victory.

The two teams opened the first period trading baskets back and forth. Amy Blomme and Meagan Fromm put up 11 points for Scotland County while LaPlata's Ashley Baker scored all nine of her team's first period points.

Scotland County turned to the press in the second period and the moved worked.

"I wouldn't say that they had a lot of problems with our pressure defense it simply took the ball out of Baker's hands and none of their other girls were converting on the offensive end," stated Coach Andrea Dabney.

The change on defense reaped dividends on offense as well as the Lady Tigers picked up the pace on the scoring end. Ali and Meagan Fromm poured in 16 points and Jessie Cotton hit one of the team's four three pointers during the key stretch as Scotland County went on top 30-16.

When not setting up the press, SCR-I dropped back into a 1-3-1 zone, the first time all year the team has used the defensive scheme.

"The 1-3-1 worked pretty well for considering it was new," Dabney said. "It definitely helped us slow Baker down if you can believe that, even though she did score all of LaPlata's 16 points in the first half."

Meagan Fromm continued to bomb away from the perimeter adding two more three pointers in the third period to help her team add to the 47-28 advantage.

"We shot really well from the perimeter," said Coach Dabney. "That's the whole key to our team. We are obviously a guard oriented offense and if we shoot the ball well from the perimeter we are going to win a lot of games. But if the shots aren't falling we struggle."

While the shooting has been good and bad this year for the Lady Tigers, one thing has been pretty consistent all season, defense. "That's been a given for us all year long," Dabney said. "These girls play hard on defense all game long and that's been able to keep us in games even when we are struggling with our shooting."

Despite the solid play on both ends LaPlata put together a huge run late in the fourth period, trimming a 19-point deficit down to striking distance giving SCR-I a scare late. But the Lady Tigers prevailed 60-54.

Scotland County was led in scoring by Meagan Fromm with 24 points. Ali Fromm pitched in with 15 points as SCR-I evened its record at 11-11 on the season.
