Slow Start Stalls Opponent For A Change As Tigers Topple LaPlata 59-48

The Scotland County Tigers must have felt like they were looking in the mirror as they took on LaPlata February 20. For the second time this year, the Bulldogs got off to a slow start against SCR-I and dug themselves too big a hole for a late rally to surpass.

That is a reflection of many of the Tigers losses this year as the Tigers too have been notorious for slow starts.

That was not the case Thursday night as the Tigers opened up a 16-7 advantage in the first period.

"It is definitely nice to get things going well in the first period," said coach Jaryt Hunziker. "If we put some points up early that takes a lot of pressure off the guys and lets them settle into the game and what we want to do as a team."

The two teams traded scores back and forth in the second period with SCR-I going into halftime ahead 26-18.

The third period was the difference in the game as SCR-I went on a 17-7 run keyed by a pair of three pointers from Jake Fogle. Clint Cottrell had six points during the stretch as the Tigers went out in front 43-25.

LaPlata did not fold. The Bulldogs battled back to make a game of it, thanks in large part to an impressive 11 of 12 performance at the free throw line in the final eight minutes. But SCR-I hit its free throws as well, making six of seven to seal the 59-48 win.

Cottrell led all scorers with 22 points. Chase Moore added 15 points and Fogle and Nick Oldham each had eight points on the night.

The team's defense played a key role in the win. "We held their top scorer, Robinson, to just two points and that was after he was coming off a week as the KTVO player of the week, so we felt really good about the defense," Hunziker said. "The guys really communicated well and that helped our man-to-man defense get the job done."
