Huge First Half Leads Lady Tigers To Win In League Opener

Fifty-two points is a good game of offense, but the Scotland County Lady Tigers poured that many points in during the first half on the way to a convincing 70-43 victory to open the Tri-Rivers Conference schedule.

"The captains took the team aside before the tip off and they let their teammates know that the conference season is the time of year to step up our play and I think they did just that," said Coach Andrea Dabney.

The score was 23-8 before the smoke cleared in the first period courtesy of the flaming SCR-I offense. Much of the points came off the Lady Tigers defense but SCR-I did get it going from the perimter too as Meagan Fromm and Amy Blomme combined for a trio of three pointers in the quarter.

The onslaught carried over into period two. SCR-I actually opened up the floodgates further, pouring in 29 points to lead 52-23 at the break.

Fromm continued to work from the outside with two more three pointers while little sister Ali got all of her 14 points in the first half the conventional way. Jessie Cotton added a triple on her way to nine first half points to add to the scoring column.

"The night before we had a really crisp practice," Coach Dabney said. "They were all on the same page and were really focused on what we were trying to do."

Scotland County slowed down a bit on the second half yet still added to the lead by outscoring North Shelby 11-7 in the third period.

"I always tell the girls to go out and play as hard as they can as long as they can and come back to the locker room exhausted," Dabney said. "At halftime we had some pretty tired kids but when you are up by 29 points you can afford to set the starters down the entire fourth quarter."

The Raiders got things rolling a bit in the fourth period but it was far too late. SCR-I sealed the game at the free throw line as Ashlee Frederick and Amber Brush hit from the charity strip in the final minutes to secure the 70-43 win.

Meagan Fromm led all scorers with 22 points. Ali Fromm finished with 14 and Cotton added nine. Blomme had eight points in the game as Scotland County had 10 players get into the score book.
