Top Seeded Raiders Send Scotland County To 62-42 Defeat

The North Shelby Tournament featured some of the best small school teams in the state and the Scotland County Tigers found themselves in the middle of it squaring off against the host team Raiders, the fourth ranked team in the state in Class 1, in the tourney semifinals January 23.

Early on SCR-I looked poised to knock the Raiders down a rung or two on the rankings ladder.

The Tigers played step for step with North Shelby through the first eight minutes. Chase Moore and Aaron Dale opened up the scoring for Scotland County. Nick Oldham scored on a nifty move off the dribble before Moore hit a pair of free throws. A bucket from Vince Rockhold had the game tied at 10-10 to end the first period.

But the Tigers upset hopes went up in a cloud of dust in the second period as the North Shelby press and the teams speedy guards took over the game.

SCR-I had done a fine job limiting the opportunities for the Raiders 6'8" sophomore center Cody Stoneburner. However it was two of the Raiders guards that did SCR-I in to open the second period.

Bud Hardy and Ryan McCoy hit back-to-back three pointers as the Tigers tried to clog up the middle against Stoneburner and Scotland County coach Jaryt Hunziker was forced to call a timeout.

But it was the Raiders defense that actually blew the game wide open. The North Shelby press led to eight points off turnovers in a key four-minute spurt that sealed the Tigers fate. After a jumper by Moore made the score 16-12, North Shelby went on a 9-0 run before finishing the first half with a 31-16 advantage.

Scotland County looked like it might make the game interesting late in the third period. Clint Cottrell scored six points during an 8-0 run by the Tigers to get his team close.

But any hopes were then dashed by a 7-0 run by the Raiders capped off by a three pointer at the buzzer to end the third period.

The two teams traded buckets in the final eight minutes as North Shelby (12-2) went on to the 62-42 win.

Moore topped the SCR-I scorebook with 12 points. Cottrell finished with eight and Oldham added seven points in the losing effort. Hardy led North Shelby with 16 points. Andrew Eitel had 12 points and Stoneburner finished with 11. Scotland County falls to 4-10 on the season with the loss.
