Marion County Outlasts Lady Tigers In Third Place Game

The Scotland County Lady Tigers resembled an Oreo cookie Saturday night in the third place game of the North Shelby Tourney, they had all the good stuff in the middle.

Unfortunately the cookie crumbled in the end for SCR-I as Marion County came from behind in the fourth period to prevail 48-38.

Scotland County fell behind in the first period, managing just six points on offense.

That all changed in quarter two when Amy Blomme sparked a big run with a pair of three pointers on her way to a season-high 14 points. The senior guard had eight points in the period that saw Scotland County pull ahead 21-19.

The momentum carried over into the third period. Brandi Mallett continued her strong play of late as she had a pair of big baskets in the quarter to help SCR-I stay on top 32-31.

Unfortunately the offense stalled down the stretch for the Lady Tigers. The defense gave way too as SCR-I was forced out of its normal zone and had to chase Marion County around as time ran down.

"We were down six points with three minutes to play and they simply pulled the ball out on offense to run the clock," stated Coach Andrea Dabney. "That forced us to match up and we simply couldn't contain them one-on-one."

Leah Wilson did the bulk of the damage with six points in the final period on her way to a game-high 20 points to lead Marion County.

"We played a little tentative on offense and I believe we were simply tired from our third night on the road," Dabney said. "Still it wasn't caused by a lack of playing hard. I looked up with only a few seconds left on the clock and the game was basically over but the girls were still denying the ball and giving every effort on defense."

Marion County won the game at the free throw line where they hit 12 of 16 free throws. SCR-I had just eight attempts at the charity stripe.
