Tigers Bring Home 3rd Place Trophy With 57-52 Victory
In a season of ups and downs the Scotland County Tigers created their own highlight by securing the third place trophy from the North Shelby Tourney with a 57-52 victory over LaPlata on January 25.
SCR-I set the tone in the first period building a 21-8 advantage. Aaron Dale led the onslaught with eight first quarter points. Clint Cottrell added six points during the run.
"I went with a little different starting line-up and I think it paid off," said Coach Jaryt Hunziker. "They played a lot of zone defense too and I think we play a little better against that type of defense."
But it wasn't easy sailing for the Tigers despite the hot start. LaPlata cut into the deficit in the second period before making a true run in the third quarter. The Bulldogs outscored SCR-I 14-7 in the third to come within three points.
"I was starting to get a little nervous at that point," Hunziker stated. "But we pulled together late in the game and held on for the win."
Chase Moore and Danny Roach played key roles in the final eight minutes, combining for 13 of the Tigers 15 points down the stretch. Roach was a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line to help preserve the win.
Moore led the Tigers on the night with 17 points. Dale and Cottrell each finished with 12 points.
"Chase has really picked up his play as we are heading into our conference schedule and that's good timing. We will need him to keep it up as we close out the year," Hunziker said.
