Lady Tigers Rally Against Clark County Falls Short

Trailing the fifth ranked team in the state by 14 points with just eight minutes left to play is not an envious position but the Scotland County Lady Tigers nearly pulled off the upset before finally falling to Clark County 42-39.

SCR-I made a hard charge down the stretch and had two opportunities in the final seconds to tie the game but could not complete the upset as Clark County held on for the victory in the semi-finals of the Highland Tournament January 8.

The Lady Tigers lost point guard Jessie Cotton early in the game to a sprained ankle. The team's back court combination never recovered as a jumper by Amy Blomme midway through the third period was the first points of the night for SCR-I from a guard.

That was after the team had already fallen behind 29-17 at halftime. The deficit grew larger at points in the third period before the third period ended with the score 39-27.

Scotland County fell behind 41-27 with 4:51 in the contest when the rally began. Katie Kittle scored on an offensive rebound to get things rolling.

Meagan Fromm took over from there. She hit a pair of free throws before running off three straight baskets to make the score 42-37. She got the job done on the defensive end as well with a couple blocks to keep her team in the contest.

Blomme came up with a big steal on the next possession and got the ball to Ali Fromm on the fast break. She was fouled and hit both clutch free throws to pull the Lady Tigers to within three points with more than a minute to play.

Clark County ran part of the clock down as Coach Andrea Dabney chose not to foul. The strategy worked as the Lady Indians took an ill-advised shot and SCR-I got the ball back with 32 seconds to play.

However the rally came up short as the Lady Tigers turned the ball over and were forced to foul. They got one last chance when Clark County missed the free throw but a three pointer by Meagan Fromm at the buzzer was no good.

Fromm finished with a season-high 25 points to lead SCR-I. Jennifer Crawford added six points for the Lady Tigers who fell to 5-4 on the season.
