GERALD L. GUNDY
(4/15/1909 - 12/6/2003)

Gerald L. Gundy, 94, of Kimberling City, MO, died Saturday morning, December 6, 2003, at the Skaggs Community Health Center in Branson, MO.

He was born on April 15, 1909 at Cortez, CO, the son of Judge L. W. and Alice (Ridge) Gundy.

The Gundy family moved to Scotland County to a farm located north of Crawford when he was a small child. Gerald attended Friendship Grade School and graduated as the Valedictorian from Memphis High School. He then attended Fayette College in Missouri.

Gerald managed a service station on the South Side of Chicago, near Stoney Island, for several years.

Gerald married the former Elvis Lancaster on July 12, 1939, and they lived in Chicago. She survives.

In 1943, Gerald joined the United States Navy and took boot camp at the Great Lakes. He was sent to Texas A&M University and later to Treasure Island in San Francisco for further training. He was selected to return to Chicago and became an instructor at Navy Pier. He taught radar there until the end of World War II.

Following the war, he attended college at RCA Television Institute, earning his engineering degree. There he was a student of Dr. Lee DeForrest, who invented the Cathode-ray tube and was a pioneer in the invention of the television.

After Gerald earned his degree at RCA, he went to work for the CIA at Washington DC. During his 20-year career with the CIA, he traveled all over the world. In retirement, he enjoyed the farm life, golfing, and his many friends, especially the marathon card playing at the country club.

Gerald and Elvis lived for four years at the Gardens Assisted Living in Springfield, MO. They then moved to the Branson Meadows Assisted Living.

He moved to the Table Rock Health Care Center in Kimberling City when Parkinsons Disease caused a weakness that led him to require skilled nursing care. He had been a resident there for several months. Elvis moved to a duplex that was less than a block away from Table Rock, and she was with him every day. He contracted pneumonia, and his family was with him when he passed away.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Helen and her husband Bill Avard; and brother Leland and his wife Mildred Gundy.

He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Linda and husband Wayne Larsen of Memphis; his son, George Larry and his wife Linda Gundy of Shell Knob, MO; his granddaughters Tamara and husband Jeff Mathias of Ocean City, MD, Jennifer Gundy of Columbia, MO, Shannon Gundy of Kimberling City; his grandson Jason Higbee of Delta, PA; his great-grandchildren James and Mary Clare Mathias; a niece Joan and husband Robert Vaughn of Las Vegas, NV; nephews John and wife Ann Avard of Surprise, AZ, and Stephen and wife Bonnie Avard of Sherman, TX; and many cousins and friends.
