Clifton Cleave Smith, 87, of Downing, MO, passed away on November 29, 2003, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

The son of Thomas Henry and Lizzie Ann (VanKueren) Smith, he was born September 23, 1916 in Minnesota.

On November 12, 1946, he married Vera (Lewis) Stice in Edina, MO.

Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Sylvester, Cecil and Millard; four sisters, Alice Smith, Merrilla Smith, Merna Ferdig and Una Smith; and one step-great-grandson, Dakota Swedberg.

Surviving are his wife, Vera of Downing, MO; one son, Larry Smith and wife, Raenelle of Downing, MO; one daughter, Judy Agee and husband, Arlo of Ottumwa, IA; four step-sons, Loral Stice and wife, Barbara of Plato, MO, Robert Stice and wife, Arlene of Downing, MO, Jim Stice and wife, Judy of Lapine, AL, and Vernon Stice and wife, Leona of Carl Junction, MO; four grandchildren, Cliff Agee of Ottumwa, IA, Shawn Agee and wife, Sharleen of West Des Moines, IA, Sue Jane Siver and husband, Jim of Downing, MO, and Tom Smith and wife, Emily of Jefferson City, MO; five great-grandchildren, Chance and Scott Agee, Natasha, Diane, and Christian Siver; 14 step-grandchildren; 35 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Beerbower of West Virginia and Mildred Lane of Rock Island, IL; and one brother, Ishmael Smith of Downing, MO.

Clifton served in the United States Army in World War II. He was a member of the American Legion. He worked as a Communications Lineman for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years.

Funeral services were held on December 2, 2003, at the Norman Funeral Home in Downing, MO with Reverend Bob Garringer officiating. Music was provided by organist, Willa Gooden, and soloist, Schelle Cooley. Pallbearers were Tom Smith, Cliff Agee, Danny Stice, Roger Stice, Tim Stice and Randy Stice. Memorials have been established for the American Legion in Queen City, MO or Downing City Cemetery. Interment was in the Downing City Cemetery in Downing, MO with military rites conducted by the Schuyler County American Legion Post #784. Final arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home of Downing, MO.
