HAROLD E. KIRKPATRICK
(11/2/1911 - 11/19/2003)

Harold E. Kirkpatrick, 92, of Memphis, MO, died on November 19, 2003, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

He was born November 2, 1911, on the family farm, in the Lawn Ridge Community northeast of Memphis. Harold was the youngest son of Elmer and Oleva Kirkpatrick.

In 1918 his parents purchased a farm north of Memphis, MO. His oldest brother, Myron and wife, Ethel remained on the Lawn Ridge farm, while his second brother, Milo attended Chillicothe Business College.

Harold graduated from Memphis High School in 1931, and remained with his parents, farming and caring for his invalid father and elderly mother. While attending Memphis High School he took a Mechanical Drawing class taught by Lee Lillard. While in the class he drew blue prints for a new house to be built by his parents on the farm. In 1932 on Memorial Day, they started tearing down the old house. They moved the furniture to the hayloft of the barn. They ate dinner in the new house on Thanksgiving Day, 1932. The home stands today as the family farm.

On July 30, 1938, Harold was united in marriage to Opal Garrett, and to this union two children were born, Neal and

Nola Ann.

Haroldís father died in 1939, the funeral held in the home. Haroldís mother then purchased a home in Memphis, MO previously owned by the Paynes. She died in November 1950, just before Nola was born. She always said, ďNeal was going to have a little sisterĒ! Harold, Opal, Neal, and Nola Ann continued to live on the farm.

Harold was asked by T.C. Smith if he would come to work at the Bank of Memphis because he admired the exactness of Harold handling his fatherís business. He began working at the bank in 1940, worked in different capacities, was a director for 32 years and retired as chairman of the board in 1986.

Harold devoted much time serving his community. He served on the Pleasant Hill School Board and continued on the Scotland County School Board for 23 years until he retired the year after Nola Ann graduated from high school. He helped organize the Scotland County Fire Corp. and was secretary for 13 years when he retired.

Harold and family attended the First Christian Church, where Opal was a life-long member. On November 28, 1954, Harold and son, Neal were baptized together at the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO by Rev. Brewer. Nola Ann was baptized March 29, 1964, at age 13 years. Harold was a deacon and financial secretary many years for the church board.

He is survived by his wife, Opal of Memphis, MO; one son, Neal Kirkpatrick and wife, Dawn of Lake Mary, FL; one daughter, Nola Ann Boyd and husband, Joe of St. Charles, IL; three grandchildren, Joseph Kirk Boyd of St. Charles, IL, Dr. Brian Patrick Boyd and his wife, Dr. Michelle Boyd of Downers Grove, IL, and Ann Elizabeth Kirkpatrick of Tallahassee, FL.

Also preceding him in death were his two brothers, Myron and Milo Kirkpatrick; one nephew, Milo Jr. Kirkpatrick; and one niece, Ellen Margaret Davison.

The family has suggested memorials to the Harold Kirkpatrick Community Memorial Fund, and may be left or mailed to Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
