William Leroy Piper, 85, of Burlington, IA, passed away October 15, 2003, at the Great River Medical Center, West Burlington, IA.

He was born March 1, 1918, at Downing, IA, a son of William Arthur and Louisa (Miller) Piper.

William married Grace Harris on November 27, 1938, at Bloomfield, IA. She died December 16, 1997.

He was in the Navy and served in World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

William farmed in the Argyle, IA area for many years and later worked at I.A.A.P. In his retirement he worked as a custodian at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He was affiliated with St. Luke’s United Church of Christ.

Survivors include three sons, Ronald Piper of Burlington, IA, Charles Piper of Weaver, IA, and Leonard Piper of Burlington, IA; two daughters, Janice Moser of Roanoke, IL and Joyce Piper of Burlington, IA; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace (Piper) Cossel of Bloomfield, IA; and a brother, Eugene Piper of Arbela, MO.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters, and two brothers.

Funeral services were held October 20, 2003, in the St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, Burlington, IA, with Rev. Vicki Engelmann officiating. Burial was in the Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington, IA. A memorial has been established for St. Luke’s United Church of Christ. Lunning Chapel, Burlington, IA, was in charge of arrangements.
