LEONA R. PARRISH

Leona R. Parrish, 92, of Galesburg, IL, died July 23, 2003, at Heartland Health Care Center, Galesburg, IL.
She was born June 6, 1911, in Arbela, MO, the daughter of Pete and Jennie Becktol Robinson.
She married Cecil W. "Mike" Parrish, May 18, 1929, in Memphis, MO. He preceded her in death June 28, 1964.
Surviving is a son, Sam (and Vickie) Parrish of Cameron, IL; two daughters, Karen (and Jim) Towers of Aurora, IL and Nancy (and Tom) Staray of Downers Grove, IL; one granddaughter; three grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
She was a teacher for a total of 38 years, beginning in one room rural schools in Gorin, Wyaconda, and LaPlata, MO and Fort Madison, IA. Then she was a first grade teacher for 21 years at the former Nellie Swanson School in Galesburg, IL, where she retired in 1976. She graduated from Gorin High School in 1929, Gorin, MO. She received her BA degree from Northeast Missouri State University Teachers College in Kirksville, MO. She attended the University of Iowa in 1951, and received her master's degree in education from Western Illinois University in Macomb, IL in 1961. She continued to take classes for many years.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Galesburg, IL, and was affiliated with the Gerlaw Christian Church, Gerlaw, IL. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in LaPlata MO, the Illinois Retired Teacher's Association, former member and past president of the Galesburg Education Association and a member of the Teacher's Union in Galesburg, IL.
Funeral services were held July 25, 2003 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel, Galesburg, IL with Rev. Paul Lydic officiating. Graveside service was held July 26, 2003, in the Gorin Community Cemetery, Gorin, MO with Order of Eastern Star Rites conducted. Memorials may be made to the Gerlaw Christian Church.
