WILLIAM A. LEWIS

William Aaron Lewis, 68, of Lancaster, MO, died March 20, 2003, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center at Kirksville, MO.
He was born on May 14, 1934, at Canton, MO, the son of James O. and Alma (Cooksey) Lewis.
He was educated in the Canton schools, graduating from Canton High School in 1952. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Judge Adjutant General Corps in field artillery during the Korean conflict, receiving an honorable discharge in 1955.
He returned to Canton to attend Culver-Stockton College, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He graduated in 1957 with a B.A. degree in business administration and economics. He joined the Ayers Oil Company as a field representative for northeast Missouri before moving to Lancaster, MO in 1961 to take over operations of the Modernaire Truck Stop. He continued to own and operate that business until his retirement in 1998.
He was married on June 11, 1960 at Jefferson City, MO to Janet Ann Hicks and they had three sons, William M. of House Springs, MO, Richard D. of Clearwater Beach, FL, and Thomas P. of Palm Harbor, FL.
In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by two daughters-in-law, Julie Lewis of Palm Harbor, FL, and Cena Lewis of House Springs, MO; a brother, Ben C. Lewis of Dallas, TX, and two sisters, Margaret O'Hara of Lexington, KY and Marilyn Riley of Quincy, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jim Lewis.
He was a member of the Lancaster Christian Church, Craft Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Canton, MO, Moila Temple of St. Joseph and the El Kadir Shrine Club of Kirksville, MO.
Funeral services were held at the Lancaster Christian Church on March 22, 2003, with Rob Green, pastor of the church officiating. Organist Maureen Watkins and soloist, Beth Gravett provided music. Honorary pallbearers were Walter Burnett, Jim Cottey, Craig Gardine, Roger Lucas, Payton Murl (Sonny) Smyser, Richard Starrett, Dale VanHuss, Jim Werner and Ray Wright. A private interment will be held at the Forest Grove Cemetery in Canton, MO. Memorials have been established for the Schuyler County Library. Final arrangements were under the direction of the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO.
