Lena Opal Thompson, 98, of rural Memphis, MO, daughter of W.E. (Ellie) and Carrie A. (Burgess) Burrus, was born November 13, 1904 and departed this life on March 9, 2003.

On March 30, 1929, she was united in marriage to Orval Thompson, son of LeRoy and Martha Thompson. To this union one son, Donald W. Thompson, was born.

Mrs. Thompson graduated from Memphis High School with the class of 1924 and from what is now Truman University in Kirksville, MO, with the class of 1959. She taught school for twenty-two years, first in a one-room schoolhouse, then later sixth grade in the Scotland County R-1 School in Memphis.

After retiring in the spring of 1970, she cared for her grandchildren for five school years. Mrs. Thompson spent her entire life in the Bible Grove and Edinburg areas of Scotland County, MO, south of Memphis.

Her hobbies were making quilts and crocheting. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO, and was a member of the Loyal Women's class of the church. In earlier years, when they existed, she belonged to the Business and Professional Woman's Club and to an Extension club.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; her son Donald; a sister; a nephew; and twin great grandsons.

Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Alice Thompson of Ft. Madison, IA; grandson, Tracy Thompson and wife Jacqueline and her great grandson, Lucas, all of West Burlington, IA; her grand-daughter, Tamara Madsen and husband Todd of Bozeman, Montana; several cousins, most of whom are out of state; along with her nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO, with Brother Jack Sumption officiating. Special music was provided by Joan Hinds, organist, and Elaine Forrester and Angela Westhoff, vocalists. Serving as pallbearers were Tracy Thompson, Sterling Forrester, Ellis Oberholtzer, Stanley Myers, Ivan Martin, and Talmon Martin. Honorary bearers were Dean and Richard Frederick. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery.

Memorials have been suggested to the Bible Grove Christian Church Cemetery, the Edinburg Cemetery, or to the First Christian Church in Memphis. Gerth Funeral Service is handling arrangements from their Memphis chapel.
