Pearl Louise Armstrong, 74, of Memphis died Thursday afternoon, January 9, 2003, at her home.
She was born the daughter of Carl and Elsie (Nold) Hawkinson in Potter County, South Dakota on February 20, 1928. She married John Kenneth Armstrong on July 20, 1947 in Miller, South Dakota. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1966.
Pearl enjoyed quilting and crafts. She also enjoyed watching birds and loved animals. Pearl held a variety of occupations in her life, being employed for the longest period at Sheller Globe in Keokuk, before retiring from Pamida in Memphis last month. Pearl was very proud of being president of the trucking operation of Big A Enterprises for several years.
She was a member of the Methodist Church. Her life reflected the love of her Lord.
Most of all, Pearl loved her family. She raised her three sons after her husband's passing. Her brother Jerry said, "She was a good sister."
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; parents-in-law, Ora Earl and Margaret Ann Armstrong; her brother, Robert Hawkinson; and brothers and sisters-in-law: Cleota Pearl Armstrong, Norma Louis Armstrong, Doris Lucille Armstrong, Ernest Leland Armstrong, and Lois Leona Armstrong.
She is survived by her sons, Roger and wife Noralyn Armstrong of Memphis; Ralph Armstrong and special friend Carol Stewart of Memphis; and Randy and wife Tammy Armstrong of Rutledge; her brothers, Howard and wife Belva Hawkinson of Gettysburg, SD, Larry and wife Virginia Hawkinson of Hoven, SD, and Jerry Hawkinson of Gettysburg, SD; her sister, Oletha Goeke of Huron, SD; her grandchildren, Tacey and husband Dusty Monroe of Granger, Kenny Armstrong and special friend Crystal Cornelison of Memphis, John Armstrong and special friend Rachel Bartz of Knox City, and Michelle Armstrong of Berlin, WI; four great grandchildren; many special brothers and sisters-in-law; her dear friend, Jean Shanks of Keokuk, IA; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 13, 2003, in the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO, with Reverend Charles Hammack and Reverend Ernest Deatrick officiating. Music was provided by Cathy Kelso. Serving as pallbearers were her sons and nephews. Honorary bearers were her grandsons and great grandsons. Interment was in the Bible Grove Church of Christ Cemetery in Bible Grove, MO. Memorials have been suggested to the Scotland Larger Parish of the United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by Gerth Funeral Service from their Memphis chapel.
