Holden Releases $75 Million That Was Withheld From Schools
Scotland County R-I will be among school districts all across the state getting a Christmas present from the state. The SCR-I School Board learned at the December 17 board of education meeting that $75 million was released last week by Governor Bob Holden to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for public schools to be applied to the foundation funding formula.
ďThat means that our district is currently entitled to receive an additional $66,261 this year provided there are no future reductions in this yearís proration factor,Ē stated Superintendent LeRoy Huff.
The current schedule for the funding releases calls for Missouri schools to receive half the payment in December with the remainder to be paid out in equal monthly payments running from January through July.
The Governor originally withheld $190 million from the education funding formula, so the recent release of funds only represents 40-percent of the money withheld from schools.
ďFor a change, the news this month is a little brighter than has been the case in previous months,Ē Huff said. ďHowever this release leaves Missouri schools still short $115 million from what educators in the state believed they were going to receive this fiscal year.Ē
Huff added that while the news of the return of a portion of the withheld funding is encouraging, the problem of appropriate funding for education still remains the stateís #1 issue.
