MACC Plans Christmas Promotions

The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce discussed its various events for the Christmas season at last Tuesdayís meeting held at Java Jitters in Memphis.

President Jim Nishida Adams told a meeting of about 30 members that the Christmas season would kick off with a Holiday Open House, which was held last Sunday and hosted by several area merchants.

The traditional Lighting of the Square will be held at 6 p.m. Friday on the steps on the West Side of the courthouse. Area musicians will be performing at the program, which follows a soup supper at the Antique Fair building.

The Chamber will also be co-hosting the Saturday matinees at the Memphis Theater. The matinees start on December 6 at 1 p.m. Dr. Harlo Donelson said that he has booked two of the three movies. Volunteers are needed to help work the concession areas. The final matinee will be on December 20. Following that movie, the Scotland County Fire Department will bring Santa to the V.F.W. where he will greet the children. The fire department will also be giving rides to the children.

The annual Home Decorating Contest will be held right before Christmas. Location of boxes where you can sign up a home or business will be published later.

A new promotion this year will be the ham hunt. Ken McMinn, from Tri Star, manages the Scotland County website. He, and MACC Vice President Chuck Kigar from Kountry Konnections, designed a game where contestants log onto, browse the site, and find where Santa Claus is hidden. When you find Kris Kringle, follow the instructions and register to win a free ham. One ham will be given away daily during the contest.

In other news, the chamber welcomed a new member, Dr. Jeff Davis, D.O. for the Northeast Missouri Health Council.

Nishida Adams said that new fundraising opportunities must be explored for next year. The MACC used a greater proportion of its budget this year printing out the business directories and tourism guides. There has also been discussion of raising the membership fee to $50 annual. An additional $10 fee will be added for memberís websites on

Nishida Adams said that at the December meeting, candidates would be nominated for office holders for the 2004 year.

The Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce will next meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, December 9, at Java Jitters in Memphis.
