Local Veteran Interviewed For Library Of Congress Project

For the past month, U.S. Representative Kenny Hulshof has been collecting the stories of Ninth District combat veterans. Their stories will soon be submitted to the Library of Congress Veterans History Project (VHP).

Scotland County Presiding Commissioner Mike Stephenson is part of this project. Stephenson attended the nations first public forum for the VHP last month in Columbia. Along with nine other panelists, Stephenson shared some of his experiences while serving in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

It has been an honor for me to hear these tremendous stories of courage and sacrifice, said Hulshof. Im pleased that the Library of Congress has taken on this very worthy project. I especially want to thank Mike Stephenson for taking part in our public forum and sharing his stories from his time in Vietnam.

It is estimated that 1,500 foreign war veterans die in the United States every day. With them, their stories are also lost. Public Law 106-380 calls upon the Library of Congress to collect and preserve audio and video-taped oral histories, along with documentary materials such as letters, diaries, maps and photographs of Americas war veterans and those who served in support of them.

Im proud to be a part of this project, Stephenson said. I thank Congressman Hulshof for recognizing the importance of collecting these stories for future generations. Im very pleased that he has taken the lead in this effort.
