Work Begins At Proposed Site Of New Casey’s General Store

Customers of the Casey’s General Store in Memphis will have to do without the services of the convenience store anywhere from two to five months but the company promises the wait will be worth it.

The Casey’s Corporation has begun a planned expansion of the Memphis store that will not only result in a totally new store but will add parking and other user conveniences.

The project has already begun as workers were on the site Monday, September 15 to begin the demolition of the building adjoining the current store site. The property was purchased earlier this year and was rezoned as commercial by action of the Memphis City Council.

The additional lot has made it possible for the company to pursue the expansion of the store.

Casey’s Area Supervisor Lori Arnold stated the removal of the old store building as well as the construction of the new store is expected to begin by mid-October. She stated the construction process likely will take anywhere from two to five months and depends a lot upon the weather.

“We started the process for the new Quincy, IL, store about that same time in October and had the new store built and ready to go by the end of December,” Arnold said of a similar project the company undertook. “This is going to be really nice when we get the new store completed. It will be worth the wait.”

The project began with the removal of the old house on the lot north of the existing store. The materials were loaded and trucked to the landfill in LaGrange in a process that was expected to take a few days.

The next step will be dirt work on the adjoining lot as it is brought up to level with the existing site. This likely will take several days as a large amount of fill will be needed.

Arnold said once the new lot is ready for work the builders will be installing the new gasoline pumps where the old house currently sits. The process will also involve the construction of a concrete retaining wall along the north property boundary. That will then be topped by a high privacy fence to protect the residence to the north.

The new store is scheduled to be built in the middle of the two lots allowing for additional footage. Arnold said the building will be all brick. She noted it will resemble the new store recently built in LaPlata.

In addition to the added floor space for expansion of merchandise the new store will also feature larger restrooms. The store will expand to offer a third gas pump. The fueling stations will also offer “pay-at-the-pump” technology.

Casey’s operates 1,293 corporate-owned convenience stores located in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Indiana.
