Local Personalities Poised To Kiss A Pig To Help Extension

If you have ever wanted to see your favorite local personality be forced to kiss a pig, well now's your chance. The Scotland County University Extension Council is giving the public the opportunity to put their money to work to force one unlucky participant to plop a big smootch on a sow in front of the packed crowd at the Scotland County Fair's Demolition Derby.

Contestant #1 is Rick Fischer. The KMEM on-air personality said not only will he pucker up for porky but he will also likely interview the swine in the following morning's Coffee Break ala the Jerry Springer Show with a special radio broadcast of "The Pig That Loved Me."

Contestant #2 is LeRoy Huff. Mr. Huff, the superintendent of Scotland County R-I schools currently is the only participant to have his own campaign. Albert Winn of Antique Fair fame is heading up a grassroots effort to help LeRoy win the prize.

Law enforcement for area youths may be a little lax over the following couple of weeks as Scotland County Juvenile Officer Jim Kigar tries not to win any votes. Contestant #3 can count on receiving a few quarters in his can courtesy of past violators and word is that his mother-in-law has placed a can just for Jim out at Keith's Cafe for all of her big tippers. Plus as the only contestant to have ever participated in a wild hog hunt (down in Texas) Jim is worried they may not find a pig willing to kiss him if he wins.

Contestant #4 is Tom Deberry is employed by the National Resource Conservation Service. Deberry is also active with the fitness center, Rotary and number of other volunteer organizations so he has plenty of colleagues "pulling" for him to win. The rumor was that Rotary was going to hold a special chicken barbecue to raise money for Tom's campaign.

Memphis Mayor Ron Alexander is contestant #5. The well-known Republican is fortunate the state budget crisis has captured the Democrats attention or there might have been a "dirty" political campaign against him. But then again most politicians are seeking the pork not wishing for someone else to get it.

The dark horse in the kiss the pig campaign is Jim McClintic. The x-ray technician at Scotland County Memorial Hospital is a well-known comedian in his off-time. He likely will get plenty of votes simply so folks can hear is comical "kiss and tell" stories.

Participants may vote for any of the six contestants by placing a minimum of 25-cents in the corresponding ballot box. The "ballot boxes" consist of a row of six coffee cans, with the candidate's photo on the front of his can.

You can vote at the four Memphis banks, Community Bank of Memphis, Bank of Kirksville, MCM Savings or U.S. Bank as well as at the Memphis Democrat or the Extension Office on the second story of the courthouse. The ballot boxes will also be available on the fairgrounds during the fair this week.

The winner will be announced during the intermission of the Demolition Derby at the Scotland County Fairgrounds Saturday, July 5.

All proceeds from the contest go to support the University Extension program in Scotland County, which sponsors many local programs including 4-H and the Master Gardeners.
