Cancer Survivors' Lap Will Kick Off Relay For Life Friday Night
What do Mona's Smilers, the A-Team, Tropical Therapy and the Senors and Senoritas all have in common? They won't be getting much sleep Friday, June 20 as they will be spending the night on the Memphis City Square as part of the annual American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.
The three teams are just part of a packed field of volunteers who have joined together to walk non-stop for 12 hours Friday night and into Saturday morning to help raise money to find a cure for cancer.
The other teams will represent U.S. Bank, Pamida, Scotland County Care Center, Scotland County Memorial Hospital, and the United Methodist Church Youth Group.
The festivities will get underway at 6:00 p.m. with a reception for cancer survivors at Java Jitters beginning at 6:00 p.m. Contact committee member Chris Tinkle (465-7322) for more information.
The annual survivors' lap will be held at 7:00 p.m. as family members join with their loved ones who have battled through the disease as they walk the opening lap of the Relay For Life.
The survivor lap will open up the relay as at least one member from each of the nine Relay For Life teams will be on the track walking around the square non-stop from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. the following morning. A closing ceremony and special balloon release will mark the end of the relay followed by a breakfast for the team members to be held at the Memphis Fire Station.
Of course no one should be hungry as no fewer than 14 different food items will be offered for sale around the square throughout the night to help raise additional money for the cause. The menu will include walking tacos, barbecued pork sandwiches, fruit smoothies courtesy of Java Jitters, snow cones, homemade ice cream, burritos, blooming onions, curly fries, Rotary pork chop sandwiches, pizza by the slice and much more.
A special luminary ceremony will be held at 9:00 p.m. to remember all those who have lost their lives to cancer. Luminary candles will be lit at 9:00 p.m. to represent those individuals. The special candles are for sale for $5 and may be purchased up until 8:00 p.m. that night. Supporters are asked to please bring their own lighter if they wish to light their own luminary. Contact any team member or committee member to purchase your luminary today.
Various other fundraisers will be held throughout the evening as well as special entertainment around the clock. The committee asks spectators to bring their own lawn chairs and plan on a night full of fun.
All proceeds from the Relay For Life go toward research and cancer patient services. The committee asks "that everyone please come support our efforts and help raise money to find a cure."
