Opening Day Numbers Up In Scotland County

Scotland County hunters got the 2003 spring turkey season off to a better start than a year ago thanks to a break in the rainy weather. Hunters checked in a total of 80 turkeys in Scotland County on the first day of the three-week season, Monday, April 21.

That was the trend across the Missouri Department of Conservation's northeast report-ing area. Harvest numbers improved in 11 of the 15 counties in the region to help boost the 2003 opening day total to 1,231 birds (1,202 in 2002). Of that total 1,105 were adult birds, with 126 juvenile turkeys being checked in.

Macon County topped the region with a harvest total of 152, Adair County was second highest with 133 turkeys checked in. Clark County had 88 birds harvested followed by Knox County with 83 and then Scotland County's total of 80 turkeys.

Lewis County had the biggest swing in totals dropping off 27 birds from 2002. Pike County dropped 19 birds from its 2002 total. Marion and Monroe counties were the biggest gainers improving 14 birds from the previous season opener.
