Nursing Home Levy Increase Approved By 492 - 418 Vote

Roughly 30 percent of registered voters in Scotland County braved the cold, snowy April 8 election day to cast their ballots in a number of issues.

Voters approved a 15-cent tax levy increase for the Scotland County Nursing Home District. The issue passed by a final tally of 492 yes votes to 418 no votes. The measure will allow the care center to double its tax levy rate to 30 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.

Two incumbent members were reaffirmed by voters for new terms on the Scotland County R-I Board of Education. Ellen Aylward received 672 votes while Gary Miller racked up 707 votes. The duo was unopposed for the pair of seats open on the school board.

Incumbent Charlie Boyer was the popular choice as the write-in candidate for the Scotland County Ambulance Board. Boyer was re-elected as a director receiving 230 votes. A number of other write-in candidates received at least one vote.

The City of Memphis will have one new alderman after Lucas Remley defeated incumbent Patty Simerl by a 150-101 margin in the West Ward.

East Ward Alderman Ronald Gardner was re-elected. He defeated challenger James Parker by a final tally of 170-65.

Michele Drummond received 370 votes for the position of city tax collector.

The Gorin area had a pair of interesting races with one yet to be decided as of press time Tuesday evening.

Two candidates tied with seven votes for the position of West Ward Alderman in Gorin. Ginger Orton and Ray Manary must decide whether to break the tie via a game of chance such as drawing straws or flipping a coin. If they can not agree, a special run-off election will be required.

A total of 27 votes in the city's West Ward were split between six different candidates. Richard Crawford nearly made it a three-way tie with six votes. Amanda Estabrook received five votes. Cindy Miller earned two votes while LeRoy Miller got zero votes.

In the East Ward Robert Carpenzano was unopposed for the alderman position and received 10 votes.

Joyce Tetlow Carpenzano defeated Art "Boot" Bass by a final margin of 24-16 for the office of Mayor of Gorin.

Voters in the region also cast ballots for three seats on the Gorin R-III Board of Education.

Leon Shaw and Edward See received 67 and 66 votes respectively to hold off Courtney Frederick (27 votes) for the two three-year terms on the school board. James Vassholz garnered 78 votes for the one-year vacancy on the board of education to join Shaw and See as winners in the election.

In the City of Granger a trio of members were elected to the Board of Trustees. Ann Barker headed the list with 27 votes followed by Roxann Inman (22) and Devin Holt (21). The fourth candidate, Robert Moseley, received seven votes.

Pat Johnson and Karen Simpson earned spots on the Village of Arbela Board of Trustees. Johnson received 17 votes while Simpson was marked on 15 ballots. Sandra Remley earned one write-in vote.

Eight different candidates received write-in votes for the Village of Rutledge Board of Trustees. Pat Powell and Hillis McCabe were the top vote recipients for the two openings. Powell received four votes and McCabe got two. Also receiving write-in votes were Vernon Matthews, Omar Zimmerman, Nita Phillips, Junior Mason, Becky Powell and Carol McCabe.
