Cancer Crusade Kick-Off Dinner Set For April 1
The Scotland County Unit of the American Cancer Society will hear from a local healthcare provider at the forefront of the battle against cancer at the group's annual Cancer Crusade Kick-Off dinner to be held at Keith's Cafe April 1 at 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Celeste Miller, the Chief of Surgery at Scotland County Memorial Hospital, will address the meeting. She will discuss a number of cancer topics with the part of the presentation centering around the year she spent in a post graduate training fellowship in breast surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Dr. Miller is a 1976 graduate of Scotland County R-I High School. She went on to earn her undergraduate degree at NMSU in Kirksville before earning her medical degree as a doctor of Osteopathic medicine in 1986.
Her internships and residencies took her to New York where she worked at Long Beach Memorial Hospital and Peninsula Hospital Center in Far Rockaway, NY before serving on the oncology fellowship.
It was also during this time that Dr. Miller became a part of the United States Army Reserve Medical Corp, serving as a major in the 356th Field Hospital at Rocky Point, NY. She served in the reserves from 1989 through 1997.
Dr. Miller was part of a group surgical practice in New York and also maintained a solo practice before deciding to return to Scotland County in February 2002.
Area residents interested in learning more about cancer and its treatments as well as the efforts of local residents to help fight the war against the disease should plan on attending this meeting.
The Crusade Kick-Off is a Dutch treat meal. For reservations contact Maxine Cook at 465-2511 or 465-2204 or Dorothy Harvey at 465-8566 by March 30.
