Soil District Meeting Draws Large Crowd

The Scotland County Soil and Water Conservation District held its annual meeting at the V.F.W. in Memphis on March 6th.

Stanley Hatfield, chairman of the board, called the meeting to order and Darla Campbell, secretary of the board read minutes of the 2002 meeting and Bruce Childress, treasurer gave the financial report.

Paul Campbell, project manager of the Little Fox AgNPS Project gave a report on the new project that serves the landowners in the Little Fox area.

Doug Rainey showed slides on "Putting Back the Pieces of the Quail Puzzle.

Angie Bulen recited the FFA creed and the FFA parliamentary procedure team entertained the crowd with a debate on raising gilts as a FFA project.

Stanley Hatfield presented certificates from the Soil District to the two grassland team members and Lori Frederick a certificate for her third place in an International speaking contest in Wyoming.

The winners of the seventh annual Conservation Essay Contest were given their cash awards. One hundred-dollar winners were Katie Kittle and Brandi Orton. Five hundred-dollar winners were Latitia Sherman and Amy Morgan. The top two essays were read at the meeting.

David Trueblood, President of the Community Bank of Memphis, presented the annual poster contest awards to the winners in the second, third and fourth grades.

Winners in the third grade division of the annual Scotland County Soil and Water Conservation District's poster contest were: (L to R) Elizabeth Duzan (4th), daughter of Michael Duzan and Marie Duzan of Memphis; Cali Holt (3rd), daughter of Gregg Holt of Arbela and Beth Houghton of Memphis; Lexi Drummond (2nd), daughter of Mark and Michele Drummond of Memphis; and Kala Childress (1st), daughter of Chris and Billie Childress of Memphis.

Winners in the second grade division of the annual Scotland County Soil and Water Conservation District's poster contest were: (L to R) Lorrin McBee (4th), daughter of Bill and Lori McBee of Memphis; Delaney Gundy (3rd), daughter of Mitch Gundy of Arbela and Rhonda Morton of Gorin; Wyatt Kice (2nd), son of Jamie Kice and Joan Meyer-Kice of Memphis; and Tayler Davis (1st), daughter of Heather Ward of Memphis and Chad Davis of Kirksville.

Winners in the fourth grade division of the annual Scotland County Soil and Water Conservation District's poster contest were: (L to R) Caleb Hunt (4th), son of Rick and Tonya Hunt of Memphis; Augusta Purvis (3rd), daughter of Lynn and Lana Purvis of Memphis; Andrea Middleton (2nd), daughter of Andy Middleton of Memphis; and Rodney Sears (1st), son of Debbie Sears of Memphis.

Ken Berry gave the invocation and over 180 people enjoyed the noon lunch provided by the Soil District. The Scotland County R-I Jazz Band entertained at the noon hour.

Darla Campbell, Agri-Business Specialist for Outreach and Extension presented a program on Lease Hunting after lunch.

The afternoon address "the Human Side of Farming" was given by Susie Oberdahlhoff of Bowling Green. She entertained the crowd with life on the farm after being raised a city girl.

David Wiggins won the 12th annual Clark B. Ewing Conservation Memorial Award.

Door prizes were given at the end of the meeting to both men and women who attended the meeting.
