Lady Tigers Capture First District Basketball Title In Teamís History

JUMPING FOR JOY. Celebrating Scotland County R-I Lady Tigers basketball players are joined on the court by a charge from the crowd as the school celebrated its first ever district championship in girls basketball after the Lady Tigers win over Knox County.

Wednesday night's Class 2 girls basketball sectional playoff in Hannibal will feature a pair of firsts. It marks the first time the Scotland County girls team has advanced into the state playoffs. However the game also features the first place team in the state, Clopton.

Clopton, or Pike County R-III as the school is also known, is located in Clarksville. The Lady Hawks are 26-1 and ranked #1 in the state by the Missouri Sportwriters and Sportscasters Association.

Richele Dorsey is the lone senior on the squad that plays an up-tempo style and a trapping, pressure defense.

Sophomore Brandi Tipton had 27 points to lead Clopton over Cairo 85-36 in the District 6 championship game March 7. That marked the schools first district title since 1998.

Freshman guard Mikal Bencomo (16 points in the district title game) teams up with Dorsey to provide the team with a talented backcourt. The Lady Hawks start two freshmen, a sophomore, a junior and one senior.

Scotland County was led this season by senior Meagan Fromm who averaged 15.7 points a game. Freshman Ali Fromm has averaged 11.3 points a contest. The sisters get scoring help from junior Jessie Cotton and senior Amy Blomme who combined to average more than 10 points a game. These four ball handlers will be called up heavily to handle the pressure of the Clopton defense.

The 2002-03 Scotland County Lady Tigers basketball team was crowned champions of the Class 2 District 5 Tournament in Memphis March 8. SCR-I defeated Knox County 40-37 to win the district title and advance to the state playoffs. Pictured in the front row (L to R) are Ali Fromm, Meagan Fromm, Amber Brush, Amy Blomme and Ashlee Frederick. The two teams will square off at Hannibal High School in the sectional contest set to tip-off at 8:15 p.m.
