Fitness Center To Host Pair Of Competitions In February

There are no phone-a-friends, 50/50 or any other life lines for that matter. There is no double jeopardy question and the winners definitely will not be the next millionaires but the Scotland County Rotary Club will be hosting its version of the famous trivia game shows just the same. The First Annual Trivia Challenge will be held February 8 starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Scotland County Fitness Center in Memphis. The entry fee is $10 per player with teams ranging in size from one to eight players. Teams will be asked 10 rounds of questions, with 10 questions per round. The team will have a limited amount time following each question to confer before providing an answer. The cumulative team score after completion of the 10 rounds will determine the winner. "Subjects covered will range from anything to everything," said organizer Ellen Aylward. "We are going to have fantastic refreshments provided at no charge to the participants so we are encouraging everyone to get their teams together and come out and have some fun." The Trivia Challenge will determine local bragging rights for top honors as the smartest team in town. All proceeds from the contest will go to community projects sponsored by the Rotary Club. If you would rather show off your physical attributes than your mental power the fitness center will also be the sight of a second community contest. The Tiger Trail Walk-A-Thon will be held at the fitness center February 22. Teams of up to five members will compete in the fundraiser to see which group can complete the most laps in four hours of non-stop walking. One member from each team is on the track at all times walking as many laps as possible during the time limit. As a team member completes a lap, he or she will drop a penny into the bottle belonging to the team's assigned spotter. (Break out the penny banks as teams will need to bring their own pennies.) Spotters will chart the teams progress on the scoreboard for all competitors to view. They will also be in charge of strictly enforcing the walking rules. No jogging, trotting or running will be allowed. The winning team will receive one-month free membership at the fitness center for each team member. Entry applications are due by February 14 along with the $20 entry fee. Forms are available at the fitness center and are to be turned into the Scotland County Extension Center. All proceeds will go to the Tiger Trail Team to help enhance the outdoor walking trail located behind the Scotland County R-I schools.
