Raffles, Auction and Lots of Chili To Help Raise Money For Fairgrounds

While the forecast is calling for polar conditions outdoors the action should be hot at the Memphis VFW Saturday, January 25. Hundreds of dollars in prizes will be auctioned and raffled off as part of the Scotland County Fairboard's fundraiser for the new cook shack and restrooms at the fairgrounds.

If the prizes and the $1,000 cow-chip bingo isn't warm enough for you then try the group's first-ever Chili Cook Off that will feature entries from cooks across the community. Entrants simply need to bring a $2 entry fee and one gallon of chili for the "celebrity" judges, Rick Fischer of KMEM, Jim McClintic, Lucas Mauck, Tom Deberry and Kevin Eggleston. Whatever's leftover from the gallon "samplers" will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

With that crew of judges, the crowd is fortunate it doesn't have to count on winning the chili auctions in order to be fed that evening. An all you can eat soup and pie supper will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the V.F.W. The cost is only $5 with all the proceeds going toward the fair board project.

Raffles will be held every half hour beginning at 5:30 p.m. giving away such items as a $100 savings bond from Community Bank of Memphis, two $50 Gift Certificates from J's Foods, and numerous other gift certificates from Pizza Hut, Scotland County Lanes, Gas & More, K&M Automotive, The Social, The Catfish Place, Nishida Company & Jim's Upholstery, Beads Lady Nishida Co., Hopkins Lumber and Arbela 4-Corners.

Other raffle items will include gifts from Rose Hardware, Gerth & Basket, Payne Funeral Chapel, Town Peddler, Countryside Flowers, The Flower Garden, Brock Station, MCM Savings Bank, Dale Racing, Kountry Konnection, Farm & Home, and Scotland County Speedway.

If the chili, pie and raffles galore aren't enough excitement then stick around for the auction set to start at 7:00 p.m.

Big ticket items on the sale bill will include $50 gift certificates from K&M Automotive and J's Foods, and a Gold Card season pass for the Scotland County Speedway.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg with more than 20 items to be sold by auction for the fundraiser. Other auction donors include Pepsi-Cola Memphis Bottling, Hauk Seed, & Feed, Audrey Glass, Richard Clark, Cowell & Cowell Feed, MFA Farmer's Elevator, Trueblood Racing, Racemart, Cunningham Fertilizer, Monsanto, Memphis Lumber, Bank of Kirksville, Struble Antiques, Phil Aylward, Ferrellgas, Kountry Konnections and Tim Slayton Polaris.

With all the food and entertainment, the question is not whether the evening will be enjoyed by all, but instead is how in the world are they going to get all this entertainment packed into just three hours?
