Suspect Being Sought After Chase Results In Death of Davis County Deputy
The search for an Ottumwa man being sought by the Iowa State Patrol in the death of a Davis County Sheriff's Deputy reportedly ended when he turned himself in earlier this week.
Justin Jacob, 20, reportedly turned himself in to Iowa authorities January 6. A warrant had been issued in Davis County for Jacob, who is charged with Homicide or Serious Injury by Vehicle, a class C felony.
Jacob allegedly led Iowa law enforcement officers on a high-speed chase across southern Iowa that ultimately resulted in the death a Davis County Sheriff's Deputy.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Dennis R. McElderry, 45, of Drakesville, IA, was killed in the line of duty at 11:55 p.m. January 3. McElderry was assisting in an active vehicle pursuit that had originated in Wapello County.
Steven McClain, a Wapello County Sheriff's Reserve Officer was southbound on Highway 63 involved in the active pursuit of the suspect's vehicle. McElderry reportedly had deployed road spikes to try to stop the suspect's vehicle when he apparently was struck by McClain's vehicle.
McElderry was pronounced dead at the scene by the Davis County Medical Examiner.
