What if?

by Chris Feeney

What if Disney World was located right here in Memphis? Well obviously it is not. No one would argue that our small community could support such an entertainment super power. However if you visit the 2003 Scotland County Fair this week you might be surprised how much bang the local fair board gets for its buck as this year's program is jam-packed with family fun for all.

Annually this group of volunteers puts hundreds if not thousands of hours into planning the summer fair, each year attempting to surpass the last with a better show, more entertainment and improved facilities. That itself is awe inspiring but when you stop and think that each and every one of these fair board members is a volunteer that gets nothing for their time and efforts except maybe an occasional thank you from a pleased fair fan, and you might begin considering their sanity. Still they put in the time behind the scenes recruiting new acts and searching for ways to improve the fair. The feather in the cap for this year's fair had to be the Tuesday night music show that featured the well-known country music star Ty England.

But the fair board didn't stop at one primetime show. The group shuffled the grandstand events around a bit and not only brought a sprint car race in for the speedway fans but then followed it up with a top-notch tractor pull. Friday night will be yet another new event as fans will get their first glimpse of a motorcross at the Scotland County Fair. If that's not enough they will cap off the night with a Fourth of July fireworks show. Saturday is just the same old, same old. Of course the usual is more than good enough to typically draw in the biggest crowd of the fair to see the Scotland County Fire Department's demolition derby.

If the nightlife's not for you, well get out there during the day and support the kids 4-H and FFA projects in the Art Hall or the livestock barns. Take the kids out to see the animals. Better yet get them out there for one of the best carnival's the fair has ever seen. There's no 40-story roller coaster but there definitely are a few faster paced machines that might make a few lesser stomachs a little queasy.

So in other words, if you're sitting around on the couch this week complaining about not having anything to do, don't blame the fair board. By all accounts this group has gone above and beyond the call to bring a superb show to all of us.
