First Period Problems For Scotland County Lead To 54-38 Defeat

A miserable first quarter laid the groundwork for a 54-38 defeat for Scotland County in the second round of the Putnam County Tourney December 12 as the Tigers made several runs at Clark County but could never get over the hump. Neither team started the contest well as nearly three minutes went by before the Indians hit their first shot. Unfortunately for SCR-I several more followed before the Tigers got their first and only score, a basket by Vince Rockhold to trail 12-2 after the first period. Back-to-back three pointers from Danny Roach and Chase Moore quickly got SCR-I back into the game to start the second period. Nick Oldham scored inside on a nice pass from Aaron Dale to bring SCR-I within six at 18-12 with 3:57 left in the first half. Oldham put in six straight points but it was not enough to keep Clark County from rebuilding a double-digit advantage at 28-18 at the break. The Indians press took its toll in the third period After a Jake Fogle three pointer Scotland County went scoreless for almost four minutes, watching the Indians lead bulge to 16 points. SCR-I cut into the deficit at the free throw line as Rockhold and Moore both nailed two at the charity stripe. A basket by Michael Lodewegen had the Tigers within 10 points at 41-31 heading into the final eight minutes of play. Dale scored on an offensive rebound to open the fourth period. After Roach hit one of two free throws Clint Cottrell scored in the paint and the Tigers trailed by just seven points, 43-36. That was as close as it got as Clark County responded with a run of its own. Cottrell added another basket with 2:52 left to play but that proved to be the final tally for the Tigers as Clark County held on for the 54-38 win. Moore led the Tigers with nine points. Oldham and Roach each finished with six points. The loss dropped Scotland County to 1-4 on the season.
