Campus Bowlers Win Opener Of WGEM TV Event
The 2002-03 Scotland County campus bowl team not only made its television debut last week, the team guaranteed a sequel by defeating Clark County in the opening round of the Quincy University Academic Challenge October 20 in Quincy, IL.
The SCR-I team used a high scoring second half to outlast Clark County. The game was tied at 125-125 at the intermission before the Tigers put the game away late.
Ryan Hinds led the SCR-I scoring efforts with eight correct answers. Michael Lodewegen had six scores. Jennifer Crawford added three while Jason Findling pitched in with two.
The opening round was held at Quincy University's Health and Fitness Center Hall of Fame Room. The games were hosted by WGEM's Ron Brown with the contests scheduled to be aired on the Quincy television station in November and December.
The Scotland County vs. Clark County game is scheduled to be aired on WGEM at 6:00 p.m. on November 23.
The victory sends SCR-I into the second round where the team was to face the winner of the Colchester vs. Carthage game. The contest was played October 27th.
The 16-team field was trimmed to eight after the first round of competition. The semi-finals along with the quarterfinals were to be played October 27 with the championship game scheduled for 3:30 p.m. that Sunday.
The QU Academic Challenge entered its 13th season with teams from Missouri, Iowa and Illinois. Clark County and Scotland County were joined by Hannibal and North Shelby to represent Missouri. Central Lee represented Iowa while Camp Point, Carthage, Colchester, LaHarpe, Griggsville-Perry, Unity, Quincy Notre Dame, Macomb, Pittsfield, Nauvoo-Colusa, and Quincy Senior H.S. represented Illinois.
