SCR-I Falls One Run Short In Quest For 1st District Title In More Than A Decade

Runs were few and far between in the Class 2 District 12 championship game between Scotland County and Putnam County Saturday, October 12 in Edina.

Perennial district champs Putnam County was favored to once again advance to the state playoffs while SCR-I was trying for it's first district title.

Scotland County delivered the first blow in the bottom of the first inning. Sara Eggleston led off with a single. Amy Blomme reached on a Putnam County error. With one out Jenna Shalley delivered an RBI single. Blomme was caught in a run down for the second out of the inning. Brandi Mallett flew out to end the frame.

The Lady Tigers had a pair of runners cut down on the base paths early in the game and came to regret it late in the game with only one other runner reaching scoring position in the final four innings.

In the third inning Meagan Fromm singled with two outs. Shalley followed that with her second hit of the game but Fromm was caught in a run down and tagged out to end the scoring chance.

Eggleston was doing her best to make the early run stand up. She hit a batter in the first frame but that was the lone base runner through the first three innings.

The Lady Midgets threatened to tie the game in the fourth inning. A hit and a base on balls found the team with runners at second and third with only one out. Jessie Cotton made a nice play on a pop out before Eggleston ended the threat on a comebacker to keep SCR-I on top 1-0.

Scotland County had a chance to add an insurance run in the fifth inning. Jennifer Crawford singled up the middle to lead off. She went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rebecca Consbrock. But Putnam County catcher Katie Fowler made a diving catch on a foul ball by Eggleston to record the second out of the inning. Blomme grounded out to end the scoring chance.

Putnam County finally broke through in the sixth inning as the SCR-I defense lapsed. A leadoff single turned into a run courtesy of three SCR-I miscues in the field. With two outs another Scotland County error had a runner in scoring position before Mallett erased the threat by throwing out the runner trying to steal.

The Lady Tigers saw their hopes of a first district title slipping away in the top of the seventh. Putnam County started the inning with a single that turned into extra bases with another SCR-I fielding error. A sacrifice bunt was all it took to score what proved to be the winning run.

Scotland County was retired in order in the bottom of the inning as Putnam County advanced to the state playoffs with a 2-1 win.
