Highland Knocks SCR-I Out Of Knox County Softball Tourney
Jessie Cotton gets ready to field the ball as the pitch heads toward the plate during the SCR-I game at the Knox County Tournament.
Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades but the SCR-I softball team was inches away from tying the game and forcing another extra inning affair in game two of the Knox County Tournament September 7.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning Sara Eggleston walked and stole second base. Down to the team's final out Meagan Fromm lined a single into leftfield. When the throw was bobbled by the shortstop coach Terri Slaughter sent Eggleston home and watched as the Highland player miraculously recovered and made a perfect throw from her knees in short left field to nail the runner at home and end the game.
Highland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Highland's pitcher Larraleigh Kraft delivered at the plate with an RBI single. Kraft came through with another base-scoring single in the fifth inning to make the score 2-0.
SCR-I rallied in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. Jessie Cotton singled and moved up on a passed ball by the catcher. Cotton then scored when Rebecca Consbrock reached base on a fielding error by the second baseman. Walks to Eggleston and Fromm loaded the bases but SCR-I could not push across the tying run.
The loss dropped Scotland County out of the tournament and sent the SCR-I record to 3-2 on the young season.
Eggleston pitched all seven innings to give her 15 innings of work in the tournament. She allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out five. One of the two runs was unearned.
