Tigers Perform Well At Van Buren Relays

A pair of Tigers track standouts made notice they will be strong contenders for state competition later this month and the team's 4x800 meter relay team continued to show it would be a state contender as well with strong showings at the Van Buren Relays April 29.

The Scotland County team went up against 14 of the best teams in southern Iowa from both A and AA class schools. SCR-I finished third in the A standings with 72 points behind WACO with 94.5 and Cardinal with 74.

Jason Findling had his best jump of the year to win the long jump event. The sophomore cleared 21 feet 9.25 inches to blow away the rest of the field in both the A and AA divisions. The next best jump was 20 feet one inch.

The Tigers got a similar performance in the discus where Jason Glass dominated the event with a throw of 141 feet one inch. That easily would have won either division.

The school's 4x800 meter relay team racked up another win finishing the event in 9:03.78. Coach Marc Colvin said the team will have to shave a couple seconds off that time to win the district event as Brookfield will give SCR-I a tough run for the state qualifier. The team is made up of Clint Cottrell, Cody Holt, Danny Roach and David Hillyer.

Findling wasn't done after the long jump. He went on to take first place in the 400-meter low hurdles in a time of 1:00.18.

The field events continue to be the Tigers strengths as the team picked up third place points in both the high jump and the shot put. Holt was third in the high jump, clearing five feet six inches. Cottrell tied for fourth in the event. Brett Masden took third in the shot put with a heave of 41 feet 11 inches. Andrew Bulen was fifth in the discus with a throw of 113 feet 10 inches.

SCR-I took second place in the 4x200 relay in a time of 1:39.66. The team is made up by Tim Robinson, Aarron Holt, Tim Buford and Findling.

Cottrell finished third in the 800 meter dash. Roach was fifth in the race. Bradley Wood was sixth in the 400 meter dash.

Buford took fourth place in the 200 meter dash while finishing sixth in the 100 meter dash. Jon Keller was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles and Kiel Fogle was sixth in the 3,200 meter run.

The Tigers also picked up fifth place points in the 4x100 meter relay and the 1,600 meter relay as well as sixth in the 4x400 meter relay.
