Lady Tigers Take Big Step Forward In League Standings

It took a little longer than they would have liked but the Scotland County Lady Tigers managed a 41-30 victory over Milan February 5 in Memphis to jump back into the hunt for a top finish in the Tri-Rivers Conference.

SCR-I improved to 2-2 in league play on the same night that saw North Shelby and Brookfield fall. That means the Lady Tigers are tied with both teams with just two losses in league play.

Scotland County had a tough time with the Wildcats early on. Sara Norton put up four quick points for SCR-I but that was all the scoring the team could muster until Meagan Fromm made back-to-back steals and went coast to coast for a couple easy scores to tie the game at 8-8 at the end of the first period.

Points continued to be hard to come by in the second period as well. Fromm opened the period with a driving score but was unable to find the mark the remainder of the quarter. She was still able to make key plays as she drew the defense to her and found Norton inside for an easy score. The lone other tally came on a steal and lay-up by Amy Blomme that sent the Lady Tigers to the locker room at half time tied at 14-14.

SCR-I finally started to pull away in the third quarter. Jessie Cotton drove to the basket for a score just eight seconds into the period. SCR-I went nearly four minutes until the next score, when Cotton hit a three pointer. That seemed to open the flood gates, as Scotland County outdid the entire first 20 minutes of the contest in just the next four minutes.

Fromm converted a three point play to build a 22-17 advantage. Norton then scored on the baseline followed by a basket in the paint from Valerie Crawford. Cotton scored on the next two possessions before Fromm added another hoop to cap off a 15-point spurt that saw SCR-I pull ahead 32-22.

Milan was never really able to cut into the lead in the final eight minutes as Scotland County posted the 41-30 win. Crawford, Fromm and Brenna Cook each had a bucket in the final period while Norton added three points to close out the game.

Fromm paced the Lady Tigers offense with 13 points while Cotton also broke double digits with 11 points. Norton added nine points in the victory.
